Our customer of 40 years' standing has become very forgetful and
confused so his son has started to help him with his affairs. It appears
that the TV became mistuned (quite likely given the location, (Belmont,
Waltham and Emley all available at decent strength) so the son diagnosed
an aerial fault. The old man couldn't find our phone number or name but
remembered where I live (but not the name of the street or village!) and
asked the son to give him a lift so he could come and ask us to call.
The son couldn't be bothered so he picked an installer out of the
telephone book, and disappeared back to wherever he came from (London I
think). This installer said that the aerial wasn't digital (this was a
lie; the aerial was installed by us for DTT only three years ago) so he
erected a new aerial for which he charged £240 incl VAT. He then
demonstrated that some channels were still dropping out (not tuned
presumably) and sold the old man a 'booster' for £120 incl VAT. This
turned out to be a 16dB masthead amp. He then 'fiddled with the telly
for ages' and all the channels were OK. When he'd gone it was found that
the Sky picture in the bedroom had wavy lines on it. He was called back
and fitted a modulator behind the Sky box. He looped the UHF through
this modulator but did not connect the AV from the Sky box to the
modulator. The Sky box still used its built-in modulator. He fitted an
18dB attenuator on the aerial lead to clear the wavy lines and charged
another £120 for the modulator. A few weeks later reception became very
poor. The aerial had turned round in the wind. The old man caught the
bus to the village a mile and a half from here and walked to my house,
but no-one was in. He pushed a note through the door, to which I
responded. I have told the old man that the actions of the installer are
criminal but he refuses to report the matter to the police and has
pleaded with me to 'forget it'.
