Viso fastest before rain stops practice

EJ Viso, Andretti, Indy 500 practice 2013EJ Viso led an Andretti Autosport sweep of the top three places on the timing screens in a rain-shortened Fast Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Colombian made the best use of the additional 10kPa of boost that was made available for the first time on Friday to post a fastest lap of 229.537mph, making him the only driver to have crept above the 229mph mark so far this year.

Marco Andretti and Carlos Munoz were best of the rest with laps of 228.754mph and 228.520mph respectively, leaving Penske’s Will Power as the quickest non-Andretti runner with a 228.401mph effort.

Thunderstorms brought the session to an end with just over two hours of scheduled running time still on the clock, denying those who did not get their laps in early a last chance to fine-tune their set-ups before qualifying on Saturday.

However all but one of the confirmed entries managed to log at least some track time before the rain came. Missing from the action was AJ Foyt Enterprises rookie Conor Daly, who crashed heavily during practice on Thursday.

Meanwhile, 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier completed his refresher course just before the track was opened up for official practice.

The veteran went on to complete 18 laps in his family-run car, finishing with the 31st fastest time.
